The Ibex Sciences Digital Free Fall Apparatus is an advanced physics laboratory instrument used to measure the acceleration due to gravity (g) with high precision. Provided by Ibex Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan, this apparatus replaces error-prone manual stopwatches with an electronic timing system, allowing students to accurately verify the laws of free fall. [1, 2, 3, 4]
How it Works
The apparatus tracks a falling object over a known distance to calculate gravitational acceleration using the kinematic equation:
\(s=\frac{1}{2}gt^{2}\implies g=\frac{2s}{t^{2}}\)
(Where s is the displacement/height and t is the time elapsed). [1, 2]
\(s=\frac{1}{2}gt^{2}\implies g=\frac{2s}{t^{2}}\)
(Where s is the displacement/height and t is the time elapsed). [1, 2]
System Components
- Vertical Main Column: A sturdy, upright track featuring an integrated, graduated linear scale (typically 1 to 1.5 meters) to measure the fall distance precisely. [1, 2]
- Electromagnetic Release Mechanism: An electronic holding magnet at the top of the column. It ensures the steel ball is dropped instantly without any initial human force or spin. [1, 2, 3]
- Digital Microprocessor Timer: A high-precision digital counter that records time down to milliseconds or microseconds. [1, 2, 3]
- Sensor Gates / Impact Pad:
- Photogate Method: The timer starts when the ball breaks the first infrared beam and stops when it breaks the second.
- Impact Switch Method: The timer starts the exact instant the electromagnet releases the ball and stops when the ball strikes an electronic landing pad at the bottom. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Spherical Interceptors: Steel balls of varying masses to test if mass affects free-fall velocity in a vacuum-like calculation. [1, 2]
Experimental Steps
- Set the Height: Fix the release mechanism at a desired height (s) measured along the vertical rail.
- Mount the Ball: Turn on the electromagnet power to suspend the steel sphere securely at the starting position.
- Reset the Clock: Clear the digital display back to zero.
- Release & Record: Press the release trigger. The electromagnet turns off, dropping the ball and simultaneously firing up the timer. The timer halts automatically upon impact, freezing the exact travel time (t) on the screen. [1, 2, 3, 4]
