The “Plant Cell Model” (Blister Series) by IBEX SCIENCES is a lightweight, three-dimensional vacuum-formed plastic relief model. It is specifically designed as a visual and tactile teaching aid for biology classrooms and laboratories to illustrate the complex internal anatomy of a eukaryotic plant cell. [1]
Unlike a flat diagram, the raised “blister” format allows students to easily trace and identify the unique structural barriers and specialized organelles that distinguish plant cells from animal cells.
The model features vibrant, color-coded details of the following key structures: [1]
1. Structural Boundaries
-
- Cell Wall: The rigid, protective outer layer made of cellulose that gives the plant cell its distinct, fixed shape and provides structural support.
- Plasma Membrane: The semi-permeable layer located just inside the cell wall that regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
2. Energy and Metabolic Organelles
-
- Chloroplasts: Distinctly colored in green, these double-membraned organelles contain chlorophyll and are the sites of photosynthesis, converting light energy into chemical energy (glucose).
- Mitochondria: The “powerhouses” of the cell, depicted with their inner folded membranes (cristae), responsible for cellular respiration and ATP generation.
3. Cellular Control and Storage
-
- Large Central Vacuole: A massive central compartment that stores water and nutrients, maintaining turgor pressure against the cell wall to keep the plant rigid and upright.
- Nucleus: The control center of the cell containing genetic material (DNA), featuring the nucleolus and surrounding nuclear envelope.
4. Cytoplasmic Organelles
-
- Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough & Smooth): The network of membranes involved in protein and lipid synthesis.
- Golgi Apparatus: Structures responsible for modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins for secretion.
- Ribosomes & Cytoplasm: The jelly-like fluid suspension and the tiny sites of protein production.
