Description

In a DC circuit, series resistances add together to create a higher total resistance, allowing only one path for the current. Parallel resistances create multiple paths, lowering the overall equivalent resistance to be less than the smallest individual resistor.
Resistors in SeriesComponents are connected end-to-end, meaning the same current flows through all of them.Total Resistance: \(R_{\text{total}} = R_1 + R_2 + R_3 + … [0.5.1, 0.5.5]\)Current (\(I\)): Remains identical across every component.Voltage (\(V\)): Divides among the resistors proportionally according to Ohm’s law (\(V = I \times R\)).
Resistors in ParallelComponents are connected across the same two electrical nodes, providing multiple paths for the current.Total Resistance: \(\frac{1}{R_{\text{total}}} = \frac{1}{R_1} + \frac{1}{R_2} + \frac{1}{R_3} + … [0.5.5]\)Current (\(I\)): Splits between the parallel branches, with more current flowing through the path of least resistance.Voltage (\(V\)): Remains constant and equal to the source voltage across all branches
Example CalculationIf you have a \(3\ \Omega\) and a \(6\ \Omega\) resistor:In Series: \(3\ \Omega + 6\ \Omega = 9\ \Omega\)In Parallel: \(\frac{1}{R_{\text{total}}} = \frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{6} = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{1}{2}\), so \(R_{\text{total}} = 2\ \Omega\)
